I'd assume the bacteria were growing in the presence of lactose.What would you assume if you found RNA transcript so lactos utilizing genes within e.coli?
Agreed with Zeep. Also, glucose tends to shut off the lactose utilizing genes, so I would add that not only is it growing in the presence of lactose, but it's also growing in the absence of glucose.
